Danish oil, also called Danish oil in the Netherlands, is a high quality wood oil that is used worldwide by many woodworkers, especially for skulturing/carving sculptures.

Danish oil is a tung oil, mixed with other natural oils and resins. This wood oil penetrates deeply into all types of wood and provides a hard satin-like to (if you like) shiny finish. It is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use and it is an oil that is easy to apply with a brush or cloth. It should be applied lavishly, after which the excess oil should be removed with a cloth after a few minutes. After this, a second coat can be applied and the oil can be rubbed out.
The drying time is 4 to 6 hours, depending on the ambient temperature and the density of the wood. Unlike wood treated with linseed oil, wood treated with this oil does not attract dust.

Wood that is outside must be oiled at least once a year in order to remain beautiful. This depends on the type of wood. The durability of this wood is increased by diluting it 1 on 1 with turpentine during the first treatment with Danish oil. This allows the oil to penetrate deeper into the wood. It is recommended to apply 3 undiluted layers afterwards.

Danish oil complies with standards EN 71 and BS 5665, which means that it may be used as a surface treatment for wooden toys.

Tip: If a can is opened frequently in relation to its use, the oil may start to clot. This is because the oil starts to oxidise when it comes into contact with oxygen. This can be prevented by pouring oil that is going to be used in the short term into e.g. a jam jar, and first put the can upside down for a while, and then put it away upright.
