Description
Jute for sunburn on a tree 40cm wide x 100 meters long
Bark damage caused by sunburn is caused by a combination of factors: high solar radiation , a high ambient temperature (high trunk surface temperature) and drought stress of the tree. As a result, the natural cooling of the tree decreases.
In this situation, the bark temperature can exceed 40 gr. C. and tissue damage occurs. Necrotic, drier bark strips are formed on the sunny side of the trunk, which can later burst open resulting in bark cracks and exposed sapwood.
Jute is used to protect transplanted trees in which the light intensity has been changed, for example by digging up neighbouring trees or demolishing a building against sunburn.
Beech and lime in particular can show burns when they suddenly get sun on the trunk. This can happen after transplanting or intensive crown pruning. By wrapping the trunk with jute, sunburn damage is prevented; jute breaks down slowly.
